Tamara Dey

The legendary Tamara Dey joins us in the studio. She was dubbed ‘The First Lady of Kwaito’ and we have her in studio, discussing her journey within the music industry, from starting out her career with house legends, to her latest upcoming album “DeyL’Afrique.”

Tamara was born in Belgium to an Italian father and a South African mother, they then moved to Pretoria, where Tamara would grow up. Tamara attended Lyttelton Manor High School, before going on to complete a 3 year Musical Theatre Diploma at Pretoria Tech. She made her musical debut after being discovered by DJ Pepsi in 2000. DJ Pepsi would then go on to introduce her to YFM DJ at the time, DJ Oscar, and together they went on to create the track that launched her career Thathi ‘Mphahlayakho.

She would then follow this up by releasing her debut album ‘The First Lady,’ which had features from now fellow musical legends such as Thembi, Thandiswa Mazwai and Lebo Mathosa. The album earned her 3 SAMA nominations in 2002, for Best Pop Album, Best Dance Album and Best Newcomer.

In 2005 she joined forces with DJs Ryan Dent and Craig Massive, to form group Flash Republic, playing all across European music festivals, releasing albums such as ‘Time is Now’ which was nominated for 4 SAMA, awards. They took a break in 2012, and now Tamara is back.
