Self-taught Dancer and Choreographer
Self-taught Dancer and Choreographer Mthuthuzeli Stoan 'Move' Galela chats to us about his journey and his award-winning documentary titled ‘My Father the Mover.’
Stoan started dancing at an early age in the streets of Gugulethu. He always wanted to give back to his community and as a result, he started the dance group, ‘United Township Dancers’ where he teaches young boys and girls within the community how to dance township style.
He has made a name for himself in the dance and musical industry. In 2011, he produced his first theatre dance production called "Rise of the dead'' with dancers from Gugulethu, Philipi and Khayelitsha. Two years later, he appeared in a Coca Cola TV commercial where he showcased his dance skills.
In 2020, a short documentary was made about Stoan’s life called ‘My Father the Mover.’ The film won the Best Documentary Short award at the Tribeca Film Festival.
