PJ Powers
We are joined by South African musical legend, who has had a career that has spanned over over 40 years, PJ Powers. PJ who is also known as Thandeka has been in the industry since the late 70’s, and has been a huge contributor to bringing South African music to the rest of the world.
The Durban, KwaZulu-Natal native, PJ Powers has had a long and illustrious career as an author, musician, songwriter, speaker and philanthropist. She started out as a member of girl group ‘Pantha’ before leading rock band ‘Hotline,’ until primarily going solo, where she flewto great heights. PJ is famous for hits such as “Jabulani”, “Made in Africa”, “Shosholoza”, “Bette Davis Eyes”, “Jiva Pantsula”, “We Have no Choice”, and “There an Answer”.
PJ had recently come out about her sexuality, and that being gay has nothing to do with who she is, and that she assumed that people already knew. Her recent show Firefly and her memoir are one of the few times she speaks about this publicly, her Firefly show is said to present her as never seen before in a more vulnerable, open and raw. One of the reasons she said that she never truly publicised her sexuality was because that she felt that she didn’t want to feel
as if she was exploiting the love of the gay community.
