Papy Kaluw
Founder and Designer of Urban Zulu
Self-made and Self-taught Designer Papy Kaluw from Urban Zulu chats to us about his range that is available through the AFI Boutique.
This Congo-born designer is making waves internationally as his pieces celebrate African heritages and arts.
Papy’s fashion journey began out of hardship. He was a chemistry student at the University of KwaZulu Natal. Unfortunately, as a result of lack of funding, he was forced to drop out of university and was left and had no choice but to make a living.
Papy got into fashion by selling clothes and altering them for people and soon taught himself how to design and make clothes from scratch. That is when Urban Zulu was born.
Today, he brand is worn by some of the most prominent figures in Africa. Urban Zulu is considered to be an Afrocentric fashion brand that specializes in ready-to-wear clothing that has a slight taste of Pan-Africanism.
His new range was launched at the AFI Fashion Week and is available through the AFI Designer Boutique.
