Michael van Niekerk 
 
Chatting to us today is the Founder of Keep The Energy NPO, Michael van Niekerk.
 
After gender-based violence protests broke up across the country in September 2019, following the brutal murder of Uyinene Mrwetyana and many other women and children in South Africa, Michael started the Keep The Energy social media NPO as a way to keep the memory of the fallen alive and to help survivors. The platform now has over 82 000 followers on Instagram since its founding.
 
Outside of the NPO, Michael is currently enrolled as a student at the University of Cape Town, where he is the Editor and Media Correspondent for Her Campus UCT.
 
Michael discusses with us the work Keep The Energy is doing to protect women and children in South Africa, and their fundraising to help two women shelters based in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
