Originally from Durban, Sandile ‘Masandi’ Mfusi is an actor and gospel singer on the rise. Masandi chats to Thabiso about his transition from the R&B/Soul to Gospel music.
“There are a lot of things. I think it’s just my journey, it’s something that naturally happened… I felt like there was a story that I needed to share. I feel like I needed to be used as an instrument of light, and as a vessel. As someone who brings a good message and positivity,” he says.
Masandi credits his childhood for his love of helping others.  “The way I was raised, the background that I come from, my mother is a pastor, so I always grew up with that example. I always tried to lend a hand anytime I needed to, I’ve always wanted to make a difference in people’s lives.”
His latest EP, ‘Kaleidoscope’, was released in August and has amassed over 750K streams across platforms.
“It’s a body of work that expresses everything I’ve been through. The difficulties and challenges; I’m sharing my journey which hopefully inspires people,” says Masandi.
The EP has earned Masandi two nominations at the 2022 Crown Gospel Music Awards, for the categories of ‘Best Newcomer’, and ‘Best Gospel Video’ for ‘Ithemba’. “It’s a great honour and pleasure to be a part of it and to be noticed,” he says.
Masandi remains humble and grateful in the face of success. “The last song that I did on the project [‘Amagate’], it was me summing up and being in a place of gratitude, and just saying, ‘Thank you Big Homie’.”
“I feel like this year has been one of the greatest years that I’ve had. From nominations to acting roles, a lot of things have been happening,” he adds.
