Marc Lottering is UNCLE MARC
Thursday 19 May
One of South Africa’s most-loved and top comedians, Marc Lottering, is in the studio this Thursday. The born and bred Cape Townian has been in the funny business for over 20 years, and has built up an audience that includes both local and international supporters.
Speaking about his continued support during lockdown, Marc says, “It’s humbling… It’s been two decades so that’s been my investment into comedy.”
His first lockdown online show, ‘My Fellow South Africans’, sold roughly 19 000 tickets. It was a record for online comedy shows in South Africa.
“I think a lot of people bought tickets out of loyalty. I was overwhelmed by that kind of response – how people made that decision to sustain me, and a whole lot of other artists who moved online,” he says.
According to Marc, laughter is therapy for South African’s. “It carries us through loadshedding, through looting. And I talk about all these things in my shows. As South African’s we survive through laughter.”
His latest stand-up comedy show is called ‘UNCLE MARC’, and draws inspiration from his current stage in life. Just over a year ago, Marc was in a supermarket and somebody walked past and said, “Awe Uncle Marc!” His surprised response was, “when? How am I being called an uncle now?”
He decided he had to call his show UNCLE MARC after this kept happening to him. “I just talk about the experience, of when suddenly your young friends are calling you ‘uncle’,” he explains.
