Cameron Lombard
Thursday 2 February
Cameron Lombard started dancing when he was six years old. Within the first year he started winning local and regional contests.
Now, as the youngest professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing, Cameron sees the opportunity as “a huge steppingstone for South Africans”.
“Not just for myself, but for every young kid looking up to a champion. And [them] being able to know that, ‘Oh my god, this guy comes from around the corner! I can be a champion as well!’” he says.
The 22-year-old 18-time SA Champion finds himself overwhelmed and excited by his life in London. “It’s still unbelievable right now.”
He was invited to participate in Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee Parade last June, an opportunity that he found “mind-blowing”.
Cameron is a CAN (Climate Actions Now) Youth and Dance ambassador, with the goal of empowering other dancers and creatives to build awareness around climate change and to take action within their communities.
“We’re implementing our own art, our own dance,” he says. “We’re creating a space where any creatives can join us in this movement.”
His words of encouragement for young aspiring dancers are, “Be yourself, don’t shy away from your gifts and your talent. Invest 100%, no matter your circumstances. Anything that happens around you will build you into who you’re meant to be. If it’s meant for you, it will never pass you.”
