Ashley Uys

We meet Award winning scientist Ashley Uys, who has won the stamp of approval to create a diagnostic test for COVID-19 that gives results within minutes.

The number of tests conducted per day has increased steadily since the pandemic started in South Africa, and is still expected to rise further leading to a substantially increased demand for reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) reagents.

Four projects will be supported for the development of PoC rapid diagnostic kit. The intellectual property currently held by the University of the Western Cape will be licensed to Diagnostics Aptamer Technologies-Aminotek, a commercial-ready test kit and a full scale production will be undertaken by Medical Diagnostic (Pty) Ltd.
