Andisiwe Mbunje Gaqa
Today we talk to Andisiwe Mbunje Gaqa, the founder of Isibane Se Afrika. The incredibly Khayelitsha-based choir that's recently performed in Poland, Germany and wait for it - for the royal couple Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Andiswe herself grew up in Khayelitsha and has always had a love for art and performing. Due to circumstances and bullying at school she dropped out of high school but felt it important to finish so returned later to complete her Matric and performance studies. After this she got a part in a theatre production called Amandla Mandela in Amsterdam and has since also been in movies and commercials.
But the needs of her community were weighing heavily on Andiswe who started the choir back in 2003 because she wanted to have an after school projects to keep kids off the streets. Today the choir's impact runs a lot deeper for the community of Khayelitsha as it now not only offers an after school programme for kids, it also supports youth and micro entrepreneurs, provides key choir members with a stipend and helps them in turn support their families, fights poverty as well as depression that stems from the hopelessness and struggles many face in the community, and so much more.
