National Amagwinya Day with Tsakisani Mondlani
Tuesday 30 August
Today is National Amagwinya Day, and we’re celebrating the South African gem with a spread of different fillings! Actress & Media Personality Tsakisani Mondlani joins us in the kitchen.
‘Amagwinya’ is a Zulu word that can be translated as simply ‘fat cake’ or ‘vetkoek’. The local dish is thought to be derived from the Dutch ancestry of the first European settlers in the country.
Our first recipe is for a classic Mince Curry Amagwinya, made with Royal Baking Powder. Try this fuss free method to elevate your weekday family meals and leave everyone around the table wanting more. The use of baking powder eliminates the wait-time of your dough to proof, while ensuring a light and crisp result.
Next up we have a Bacon and Cheese stuffed Amagwinya. Pro tip: to check if your oil is ready, drop a piece of dough into the oil. It should float to the middle and bubble a bit before rising to the top. If the dough sinks all the way to the bottom and doesn’t move, the oil isn’t hot enough.
For dessert, our chefs bring you Cinnamon Amagwinya with Super M Hot Chocolate.
Stay tuned for the Panado Dose of Care segment with the Bathabeleng Children’s House. We sit down with Clinical Psychologist Anita Prag to speak about the psychological effects of infertility. And Pali takes a trip up the West Coast with SA Tourism.
