Episode 108 • 2 October 2015
Afternoon Express celebrates local film this Friday.
South Africa has a vibrant and growing film industry and several releases have achieved critical acclaim. In fact, our very own Bonnie has appeared in two such films - Drum and Catch A Fire - as well as the well-received Invictus. In the loft today, we welcome Nhlane Enos Manthata and Thato Dhladla who are the producer and star respectively of the smash hit 'Thina Sobabili' which was released this past July.
Sixto Rodriguez is an American folk musician who reportedly committed suicide on-stage in the 70s. However, two South Africans went searching for him and discovered he was still alive and well, unaware of his popularity outside of the US. The two men behind the story - and authors of "Sugarman: The Life, Death and Resurrection of Sixto Rodriguez" - Steve Segerman and Craig Strydom - chat to us about Sixto's amazing story.
Also on the show today, we catch up with Nigerian actress Nse Ikpe-Etim, who is filming her first South African movie, we create another scrumptiously sweet Lindt treat, Claire shows off in the kitchen with a simple spring asparagus and pea risotto. and we look into the lives of two South African directors who were chosen to participate in the Cannes Film Factory.
