Cooking from your garden with farmer Ncumisa Mkabile
Tuesday 2 August
Have you got green fingers? Today’s episode is all about cooking from the garden and using the ‘farm to table’ approach. We are joined by award-winning farmer Ncumisa Mkabile who is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to starting your own garden.
Our first recipe is a beautiful Winter Fruit Pavlova, topped with seasonal fruit and edible flowers. Top tip: after the cooking time is up, wedge the door of the oven open. This will allow the exterior of the pavlova to dry out faster while preventing it from developing a beige colour.
We take a quick break from cooking to learn how to plant spinach seeds and cabbage seedlings from Ncumisa. Starting your own garden at home is easier than you think!
Stuffed Vegetables are next on the menu. The mince stuffing can be used in various vegetables such as bell peppers, gem squash, butternut or zucchinis. This meal is easy to prepare and is an innovative way to get the family to enjoy vegetables.
Last up we have Apple Rose Tartlets. These beautiful treats are the perfect dessert to make for your friends and family for any special occasion. Note: it’s important to cook the apples in the microwave for short bursts. This makes them pliable enough to roll into the rose.
