We are joined by songstress Yanga Sobetwa, in the studio. She rose to fame after she won one of the biggest singing competitions in the country in 2018, with her performance reaching over 1000 000 views. Following that she released her debut single “Scars” which has topped multiple charts across the country, the single is off her her debut album “Promise Land” which went to number 1 on the iTunes pop chart. This was the first time that an Idols winner’s debut album shot straight to number 1 on music charts.
Yanga was born in Cape Town growing up in areas such Langa, Delft and Khayelitsha, she was just 17 years old and still in grade 11 when she won the competition, following that she had to be away from school for 6 months and received a large music deal. She was the second youngest winner of Idols, after Paxton in the previous year. She was also the first winner to reach 1000 000 views for a performance, while they were still in the competition. She initially wanted to do gospel music however after her fanbase grew after Idols, who loved her pop sound, she went the direction of fusing both sounds going the route of creating uplifting pop that is inspired by her faith.
