We are joined by one of South Africa’s most compelling young actresses, Thuso Mbedu. She has been considered one of the leaders of the new generation of actors, at the age of 26 years old, Thuso is already a SAFTA Golden Horn recipient and an international Emmy nominee.
She maybe recognised as one of the biggest actresses in the country right now but Thuso’s life wasn’t always as good as it is right now. She grew up in KwaZulu Natal where she was raised by her grandmother since the death of her mother to a brain tumour, when she was 4 years old, It was not easy living there and she would often regret going home. She also didn’t have much of a relationship with her father, who didn’t know about her until she was 11 years old. She always knew that acting was her destiny, therefore she studied performing arts and drama at the University of the Witwatersrand. After school she left home and moved to Johannesburg with R500, in pursuit of a job, when she arrived she even had to squat with friends for a while.
Following that she landed her first television role which gave her, her big break on drama series Scandal! 2017 and 2018 have really been years of Thuso, as in 2017 she was nominated an International Emmy Award, for her role in the drama Is’Thunzi. Then in 2018 she won a Golden horn for Best Actress in TV Drama, at the 2018 SAFTA’s. She has also made it on the list for the June 2018 Forbes under 30.
