Shirley Erwee discusses the benefits and challenges in homeschooling.
Spreading across all ethnic groups in South Africa, homeschooling is a growing phenomenon worldwide. More and more concerned parents are choosing homeschooling as an alternative to institutionalised, state-controlled education where standards can be questionable, and private education, which in turn can be prohibitively expensive. Our guest today is Shirley Erwee - a parent of six children and has been homeschooling since 1997. She is the co-author of three literature-based home education programmes for South Africans and the author of a literacy and numeracy programme for pre-schoolers.
