Joining us in the loft this afternoon is multi-award winning visual activist and photographer, Zanele Muholi. Before she started focusing on the photographic journey of the sexuality and genders of black females throughout Africa, she was a human/lesbian rights activist in her community.

The Durban born photographer is from Umlazi, but resides in Johannesburg. She studied Advanced Photography at the Market Photo Workshop in Newtown, Johannesburg, then in 2009 completed an MFA: Documentary Media at Ryerson University, Toronto. In 2002 help she co-founded the Forum for Empowerment of Women (FEW), then later in 2009 she founded a forum for queer and visual media, Inkanyiso. Her activism work is to help raise awareness of the issues that are faced by black lesbian women living in South Africa, such as countless acts of violent hate crimes.

She has had her work exhibited all over the world such as Venice Bienale in New York, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Louis Vuitton Fondation in Paris, and even the Zeitz Mocaa in Cape Town among others. She was the 2017 Visual Art Mbokodo Award winner, she was also awarded with the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Embassy, in 2017
