Joining us in the loft is the recently appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng.

She is a decorated lecturer and scholar, having delivered over 40 international keynote lectures at conferences and universities across the world. She is a well respected professor, being a B1 rated scientist making her one of the most recognisable names in higher education. With such accomplishments it is no surprise that she sits as a member of the board of both the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation (DARLO), as well as the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. She was also chaired the HRDC standing committee on Mathematics and Science, in 2016, an appointment that she received from now President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Walking 10km as a child to get to school, where she would sometimes even have class, under a tree, is what sparked her passion for education, and her drive and engagement with higher education. She has obtained degrees from the North-West University in Mmabatho and Wits University, even serving as President of Convocation for 5 years, for the latter. Her academic career truly took off at Wits, having first started off in 1996 as a research assistant, to becoming an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education, and then Founding Director of the award-winning Marang Centre for Mathematics and Science Education.
