Mzambiya and Msawawa

Mzambiya and Msawawa

We throw it back on Wednesday 4 July, and are joined by former Kwaito child stars, Nkosinathi Zwane and Siboniso Dlamini, who are also known as Mzambiya and Msawawa, respectively.

The duo broke onto the music scene in 1998 as a kwaito duo, releasing hits such as ‘Wawungakanani’ and ‘eZola’ turning them in to household names around the country. Nkosinathi ‘Mzambiya’ Zwane was 10 years old, while Siboniso ‘Msawawa’ Dlamini was 8 years old, when they were discovered by record label Bulldawgz Entertainment owners, Nimrod Nkosi and Oscar Mlangeni. They were seen as being at the forefront of the kwaito era, having successful careers as both a duo and being solo artists, with Mzambiya having six albums and Msawawa having five albums, all while the Kwaito genre was at it’s peak.

They worked well as a duo because they were both young artists who seemed to share the vision of trying to spread inspiration to the nation through the power of their music, since they both knew what it was like growing up from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Due to the fact that they were famous and got large amounts of money at such young ages, they weren’t able to make the best financial decisions and ended up loosing most of their money. AS they got older, it began to seem that they were in the media more because of their personal lives instead of their music. They have recently joined forces once more and are attempting another run in the industry.
