We are joined in the studio by artist, Mongezi Ncaphayi. The 35 year old is from Benoni, Gauteng. The artist is one of South Africa’s top shinning artists and has been raking in the accumulations as of late. With the most recent of these being announced the Africa First Art Prize (AFAP) winner at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, which took place mid February 2019.
"I feel overwhelmed and so grateful about the prize. I am so excited and words cannot tell how it feels," he has said, regarding this as one of his career highlights. He was entered into the competition on his behalf by the gallery where his art was being displayed, the SMAC gallery.
Mongeszi has a number of art qualifications such as obtaining a Diploma in Art & Design from the Ekurhuleni East College in Benoni, Certificate in Advanced Studies from School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, USA, and he has completed a Professional Printmaking Course at the Artist Proof Studio. This has all led to him receiving a number of awards and accolades locally and internationally, including the Absa L’atelier Gerard Sekoto Award, in 2013, for which he received a three-month residency at the Cite Des Arts in Paris, France.
