ME/CFS Foundation South Africa
The month of May is international awareness month for so-called invisible illnesses. Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, a serious (often severe and even fatal) illness, which is also referred to as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, hence the abbreviation ME/CFS is known as an invisible serious illness. ME/CFS is a serious and life-changing condition associated with neurological, immunological and energy-metabolism impairment and is characterised by significant disability and a serious decline in functionality.
Retha Vivier, lives with ME and her journey inspired her to start The ME/CFS Foundation South Africa at the end of 2015. The Foundation which obtained Public Benefit Organisation status early 2016, supports people with ME/CFS and co-morbid conditions which often occur with ME/CFS such as Fibromyalgia and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome.
