We are joined by kwaito legend Mapaputsi in the studio. Mapaputsi was one of the originators of the kwaito sound, along with the likes of Zola 7, TKZee, and Chiskop among many others. He is best known for his 2001 album ‘Izinja’, which won him the Best Kwaito Artist and Best Kwaito Song at the Metro FM Awards in 2002.
The Zola born artist, was born Sandile Ngwenya, and in 1998 he began his music career. He chose the name Mapaputsi because it’s a fusion of Zulu and the Italian word for shoes. At the start of his career he was working the artists Sbu, TKZee and Mavusana, among others. His highly successful 2001 album “Izinja” was recorded with producers D-Rex, and YFM DJ Khabazela. Not only did the album win 2 Metro FM Awards for Best Kwaito Artist and Best Kwaito Song, but it also received a South African Music Award for Best Music Video, at the 2003 SAMAs. Followed that album with a number of follow up albums throughout the years such as; ‘Kleva’, ‘Last Man Standing’, ‘Groova More’, and finally ‘Still Barking’, in 2009 before taking a hiatus from the music industry. During this hiatus he became an ambassador SPCA’s Don't Make Us Fight, Rather Fight For Us Campaign. He also started his own record label called Izinja Production, where he has signed a number of young new artists, and also the label he released his latest song from, ‘Pusha Pusha Skorokoro’.
