We are joined by the author of “Becoming Him”, Landa Mabenge. His memoir “Becoming Him – A Trans Memoir of Triumph”, tells the story of his younger years from childhood, how he faced abuse from parents. Then it also follows his transition both mentally and physically on how he went from being born a woman to now being a man.
Landa grew up in Umtata, in the Eastern Cape, where he had to face quite a bit of abuse from his parents. In 2016 Landa established Landa Mabenge Consulting, that now works hand in hand with tellenbosch University Equality Unit to help create awareness, linkage and funding for transgender students. He stated that he created it because he understands how some trans youth can have fallouts with their families which can even lead to them having their studies funding cut. For this he, is a facilitator and speaker, as he has experienced this journey himself. He was also apart of the 2017 symposium that was trying to amend the basic education curriculum, so that it could include gender identity and sexual orientation, as a part of Life Orientation, in schools.
