We are joined in the studio by the dream team behind the South African comic superhero Kwezi. The team consists of creator and artist Loyiso Mkize, writer Mohale Mashigo, and colourist Clyde Beech.
Kwezi is the first South African superhero comic, it is based in the Gold City which is modelled after Johannesburg. It details how he went from being a narcissistic teenager who discovers that he has powers and uses them for good. It was created back in 2015. The comic is the brainchild of illustrator Loyiso Mkize, who is also the illustrator of the long-running South African favourite soccer series comic, Supa Strikas. The name Kwezi means “star” in both Xhosa and Zulu. Loyiso is not only an illustrator, he is also an author and contemporary painter.
The Cape Town-based artist studied graphic design before pursued his passion for art and illustration. His work has been showcased both locally and internationally, having had 5 solo exhibition in New York, it has also been showcased at Cape Town Art Fair, FNB Joburg Art Fair, Senegal, and Miami Basel. He always tries to translate the authentic African identity through his art.
