Up and coming fashion designer Julia' Mpoko speaks to us about her new range.
Her designs have gained a keen interest both in Africa and the United States. She showcased her menswear collection at SA Menswear Week recently, which features a selection of spring/summer 2016 collections from designers locally and across the African continent.
Julia M’Poko was born in Belgium, raised in Pretoria and completed her tertiary studies in Cape Town, South Africa. Her innate sense for fashion was visible from as early as 7 years old when she made clothes for her own dolls. During her fashion studies at Cape Town College of Fashion Design, Julia delved into fashion through styling work. Her portfolio includes The Big Bite, a local TV show; a 2013 Grammy nominated music video for Hugh Masikela titled, Sosi; and was offered an internship with the internationally esteemed African luxury concept store, Merchants on Long. In 2013, M’Poko made headlines has one of 8 finalists for the ELLE Rising Star Design Award, where she showcased her luxury women’s wear collection, Julienne.
Since then it’s been an upward rollercoaster ride, including appearances at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival’s first-ever fashion production, and having garments from Julienne featured in ad campaigns and billboards in both the United States of America and Africa.
