We are joined in the studio by a real talent, she is a female Imbongi and a singer, Jessica Mbangeni. For those who don’t know, an Imbongi is a traditional African praise poet for a chief. It is most commonly associated with men, however there are female ones too.
Jessica’s musical talents have stretched her far and wide, she has toured to countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Germany, and the U.S.A, after she joined the Soweto Gospel Choir, in 2002. Jessica has also had the opportunity of performing for South African heads of state and their dignitaries, such as Jacob Zuma, Cyril Ramaphosa and Nelson Mandela. In 2017 at the South African Traditional Music Awards, she won the Best Praise Poet Award.
In 2018 She performed at the South African Music Awards, and by the end of the night, she walked away with a Best Traditional Album award. The award was for her live album; “Jessica Mbangeni Sings iGoli Live At the Lyric Theatre.” 2018 has also seen her perform at the Bob Marley Birthday Celebration, Soul Rebel 73, that was held at the Bob Marley Museum. This was during her second tour through Jamaica, were she took part in the Black History and Reggae Month tributes and concerts. Her latest album “Iam an African” is set to be released in September 2018.
