Talented singer-songwriter, Dumza Maswana hailing from the vibrant small town of Peddie (Ngqushwa) in the Eastern Cape is in the loft to discuss his musical career. A self-taught muso he started singing and composing original music when he was a child, and started an all-male gospel band back in high school before moving up to Johannesburg in the late 2000s. Dumza writes about his life experiences and views as well as various things that inspire and motivate him in his music that moves people.
The self-taught musician has created a unique sound through his remarkable baritone voice and lyric’s that are deeply rooted in his culture and display his strong sense of tradition.
His sound is eclectic, some describing it as soulful and others pinpointing the jazz influence but Dumza does not want to place his sound in a box, stating simply that he writes "songs about everyday events that happen to ordinary people."
