We kick off the week in style, as one of the leaders of the Cape Town hip hop scene in Gugulethu, join us, Driemanskap. The Ironically named four-man group was formed in 2001 and has been at the forefront of the Cape Town underground hip hop scene, ever since their first single “Itsho Into” caused a stir.
The popular hip hop collective consists of members Elnino (Elethu Mpengesi), Ma-B (Sonwabo Kambi), Dla (Dlambulo Mancunga), and Redondo (Bukhulubakhe Nompetsheni). All four members grew up in Gugulethu, taking in the culture of the area, and brought it to the world through their music. Together they are seen as the pioneers of the Spaza movement, which is a sub-genre of hip hop, it combines the use Cape Flats slang, English, and IsiXhosa. Their music often addresses many important social issues in the country, while also instilling a sense of patriotism, of where they have come from.
The group has always stayed true to who they are, and still perform at basketball courts, universities, major concerts across the country, and traveled to perform in cities across Europe, without ever losing the identity of their sound. They have said that the aim of their music is to create platforms to inspire the people in their community.
