Dr. Kopano Matlwa Mabaso
We are joined by acclaimed author and medical doctor Kopano Matlwa, in the studio. She is one of South Africa’s most esteemed authors winning the European Union Literary Award in 2007, and the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in 2010, for her critically acclaimed novels ‘Coconut’, and ‘Spilt Milk’.
Dr. Kopano obtained her Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) at University of Cape Town, before going on to become a 2010 Rhodes Scholar and a 2014 Clarendon Scholar. She also has a MSC in Global Health Science from the University of Oxford. Her latest novel ‘Period Pain’ has landed itself onto the 2017 South African Literary Awards short-list. She became one of South Africa’s best selling authors after the release of her debut novel ‘Coconut’ which went onto to sell over 25 000 copies. Her characters in her novels address complex political issues, which many people wonder about, which is why South Africa has fallen in love with her work.
