DJ Phobia The Funkmaster

We are joined in the loft by DJ Phobia The Funkmaster, who is a visually impaired DJ and Producer. DJ Phobia who’s real name is Bongani Mambo, was diagnosed with eye cancer when he was just 3 months old, however, that didn’t deter his passion for music and becoming a DJ.

DJ Phobia grew up with his visual impairment all his life, however, his will and love for music were stronger than it, as he taught himself how to play instruments at the age of 5 years old beginning with the keyboard. While he was still in school he met DJ Christos who told him to focus on school before pursuing a career in music, and a few years after graduating a Sound-Engineering course, he would then be invited by DJ Christos to the first South African Music Conference. It was around this time that he also met Black Coffee, both Christos and Black Coffee would then go to mentor and teach Phobia how to play and vital DJ tips.

He officially became a DJ in 2005 and performed his first gig in Meadowlands Soweto, which was when he earned his name, DJ Phobia, due to others not wanting to play after him. He has currently produced over a 100 tracks to date, and right now he is currently working on his debut studio album.
