We sit down and interview the pioneer of ‘Gqom’ house music, DJ Lag himself. Gqom is a sub-genre of house, that originated in Durban but has gone on to take the rest of South Africa and the world, by storm.
DJ Lag or Lwazi Asanda Gwala, as he is known by some, went from growing up in the township of Clermont in Durban, to comanding dance floors and stages all across Asia and Europe. His original aspiration was to become a professional soccer player, however he suffered an ankle injury which sidelined those dreams. This resulted in him starting to play around with the music production program Fruity Loops, and the rest is history. He has played at several major South African events such as 2015 Johannesburg-leg of Boiler Room, and the 2016 Cape Town Electronic Music Festival, sharing stages with house music greats such as Skrillex and Euphonik, among many others.
