We are joined by the queen of The Soil, Buhle Mda. Buhle is currently embarking on a solo career journey and is set to release her album in August. Even though she is releasing a solo project, she is still very much apart of the popular acapella group, The Soil. She is also a gender activist, campaigning for women everywhere.
She has described her sound for the album as “Jazzy Fizzle”, which is a combination of kasi soul, and Afro-pop.
Buhle was one of the founding members of the Soil over 10 years ago. Since then it has not only gone on to become one of the best-selling acapella groups, but also one of the best groups emerge in South Africa. As The Soil, they had worked with many industry legends such as Louis Moholo-Moholo, and Simphiwe Dana, amongst many others. They have also travelled extensively around the world, performing to crowds of all sorts.
She started singing and truly recognising her talent, in high school, which was around the same time that she met her fellow members of The Soil. She also balances a busy career with being a mother and a businesswoman, with her clothing company Cihoshe, as well as her company SoilSista Projects, that’s aim is to empower women of all sorts, from young women all the way to pensioners.
