Joining us on the couch is KwaZulu Natal’s favourite East Cost Drive radio presenter, Bongani Mtolo. Bongani had a successful career as a car salesman prior to his radio one, but he quit it in order to follow his passion for radio, and is now a household name.
Before getting into radio, Bongani had a successful job, with a wife and two kids, staying in Pietermaritzburg, however he knew that something was missing in his life. It was at this point that he decided to make a change, and landed a midnight to 3 am weekend gig on East Coast Radio, after sending them a few demos. He would go to the station and broadcast in Durban, and while working this shift, he still kept his full-time salesman job. His road to being a top radio presenter wasn’t an easy one as he was also offered a weekday 4 to 6 am slot.
“I would wake at at 2 am in Pietermaritzburg and get dressed up for work, drive for an hour to Durban and get there around 3:30 am, do a show 4 to 6 am and then drive another hour back to pmb . Get there at 7 am, drop of my kids at school and go to my 9 to 5 for the rest of the day. I was going on average 2 hours of sleep a day.”
He has said now that it was all worth it, as now he hosts the drive show alongside Margaret Westerhof aka Mags.
