We are joined by an inovator in the world of fashion, Balini Naidoo. She is a Durban University of Technology BTech Fashion and Textile student, that has gone on to create something new, a fashion line for blind people, it uses a braille identification system in the clothing.
She said that the inspiration behind the design came from having a visually impaired family member, and she saw they daily struggle that they went through in identifying clothing material. The point of the system is to help visually impaired individuals become more self-dependant when choosing their cloths, and helps them know the material. She first displayed this design at the Durban University of Technology BTech Fashion Exhibition, which also featured other unique designs by students.
Balini had to learn basic braille, and search locally and internationally to see if the concept had already been previously thought of and done, she also did extensive research before initiating the idea. Her designs are even being showcased at this year’s Design Indaba
