We are joined by band leader, events producer/organiser and self-taught drummer, Anniki Maswanganye. She is not just a legendary musician, but she also an arts and culture activist, making sure that younger generations may also have platforms to shine. Annika has loved music all of her life, even joining family’s band at the age of 9 years old.
Anniki is a strong believer in the power of woman uniting together, and ending the stigma that women don’t get along, and are often in competition with one another, which is why in 2015 she established the “Women in Song Legacy Tour”. The tour’s aim was to help celebrate South Africa’s female artists. This comes after years of leading her all female band, called ‘Ladies of Jazz’, which she formed in 1998. The band was known to be a band that helped to break the stereotype of a male dominated music industry, especially within the jazz genre. The “Women in Song Legacy Tour”, is one of her greatest creations, that really aims to empower and share the spotlight for all women in music, across any genre.
