Abongile grew up in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, but later attended boarding school in Grahamstown. That was when she discovered her passion for ceramics and love of clay. With the support of her parents, she followed her high school passion and went on to the Port Elizabeth Technicon, where she obtained a diploma in Ceramic Design. She has said that Africa it’s self is her biggest inspiration, as she can always find something inspiring around her, that will just spark her desire, from books to the people and languages of Africa. Her family and heritage is also reflected through her work, as her parents, and earlier life all played they part of how her pieces result in
She has said that making the ceramics and clay moulds is a very spiritual and healing meditative process, thus making all of her hand crafted work, just that much more special.
“There is absolutely no feeling like that of clay in your hands. It becomes what you want it to be. It has a memory. I use different techniques in my work”
