Tea Traditions
We look at the history of tea with Five Roses tea master Dinesh.
In the loft today we have our resident tea master Dinesh Wijeyawardana who will show us how to make tea the correct way.
Tea has been enjoyed in China since 2000BC, so it’s no surprise that this drink has a number of long-standing traditions and rituals that go along with enjoying it.
There are a few golden rules to making a good cup of tea.
1 First buy a good quality tea
2 Always used freshly boiled water. To make a good cup of tea you need oxygen in the water which is why we recommend that you don’t use water from an urn which keeps boiling the water and takes out all the oxygen which makes the tea taste flat.
3 The correct composition of tea and water – the general norm is 2.5g of tea (normal teabag) to approx. 200mls of water. This is was generally the old measure for the teacup; therefore if you are using a mug then you need ensure you do not use too much water because this would make the tea weak.
4 Brewing time is essential, for all the correct enzymes that give you the correct taste you need to brew for 3-5 minutes, when you over brew tea it gives a bitter taste and if you don’t brew for long enough it does not extract sufficiently.
5 Add the milk after the teabag has been removed
